UPCOMING EVENT - Supporting Weaker Maths Students

City College Plymouth will be hosting a professional development day on Friday 6th March 2026, from 10am to 3pm, focused on strengthening the support offered to students working towards achieving a Grade 4 in their GCSE Maths. This event is designed for both FE maths practitioners and secondary school maths teachers, providing a rare opportunity for cross‑phase collaboration and shared learning.

The day is intended to be both practical and reflective, offering fresh insight, new strategies, and time to share experiences with other teachers facing similar challenges. Whether you teach GCSE Maths in a secondary school or an FE college, the event aims to equip you with approaches that can make a meaningful difference to students who are striving to achieve a Grade 4.

A highlight of the day will be a talk from Dr Serena Rossi of Loughborough University, who specialises in researching maths anxiety. Dr Rossi will explore how anxiety affects learners' engagement, confidence and performance, with a particular emphasis on those who often find themselves stuck at the Grade 3/4 boundary. Her session will introduce practical, evidence‑based strategies that teachers in both secondary and FE settings can implement to help reduce anxiety and create more supportive, confidence‑building learning environments.

Participants will also have the chance to visit and observe live FE maths lessons at City College Plymouth. These observations will allow attendees to examine different teaching approaches, discuss the realities of post‑16 maths learning, and consider how lessons are structured to support learners who are still aiming for that crucial Grade 4. The opportunity to dissect and reflect on these lessons alongside colleagues from both sectors will encourage rich discussion about how best to prepare students as they transition from school to further education.
