Teaching for Mastery

The Teaching for Mastery Programme is a professional development opportunity designed to support teachers like you to develop best practice in maths in your school.
The starting point for all schools is Teaching for Mastery - Introductory. It is suitable for schools interested in implementing a teaching for mastery approach. This two-year programme is designed for primary schools that are new to teaching for mastery and want to build a strong foundation for long-term change.
For schools already on their Teaching for Mastery journey, they continue  working with a small group of local schools, supported by a Mastery Specialist. Across the year, participants will collaborate to explore effective leadership, observe live teaching for mastery, implement aspects such as lesson design, and refine systems to maximise pupil impact; all with the aim of delivering long-term, sustained change across your school and others.
Teaching for Mastery (Introductory)

Schools engage in this Work Group for two years. Participants will be from schools that wish to develop a teaching for mastery approach.

Headteacher involvement is essential, particularly during school visits and key Work Group sessions. Each school will nominate a maths lead and one other participant to participate in Work Group sessions, to lead developments back in school.

Lead participants will attend six half-termly, school-based Work Groups each year, led by a Mastery Specialist, and be released from their usual duties to engage in regular school visits. In addition, each term, the Mastery Specialist will visit schools to support leaders in developing systems that establish and embed teaching for mastery.
