Mastering Number at KS3

Mastering Number at KS3 is comprised of two different programmes, Securing Foundations at Year7 and Developing Fluency with Multiplicative Reasoning at KS3. Schools can participate in both projects in each academic year or chose to start with one or the other, depending on your school's needs.

As a Hub we would suggest that schools that have already completed Securing Foundations move on to Developing Fluency with Multiplicative Reasoning as the perfect next step.

Please note - For all participant schools there is also an expectation that the subject leader participates in our subject leader community.

Securing Foundations at Year 7

This Work Group is for Year 7 students who have not met age-related expectations in maths, particularly students whose attainment is in the bottom 20-30% of the national cohort at the end of KS2.

A pair of participants from each school will join a Work Group; one should be a teacher with QTS, but the other can be teaching assistant or similar.

Participants are expected to attend the equivalent of three full days of workshops, and to complete school-based tasks between sessions. Workshops will be a blend of national and local sessions, and online and face-to-face provision.

The centrally-produced resources are designed to support teachers and focus on the foundations of mathematical understanding. Each set of resources has a different focus, adapting the most relevant parts of the support available for KS2 teachers so that they build on students’ prior knowledge and prepare them for their study in KS3.

This work group is lead nationally, sessions are delivered as local face to face hybrid days.

Developing Fluency with Multiplicative Reasoning at KS3

This Work Group is for teachers working with KS3 students who want to improve their own practice and begin to develop practice within their department.

A pair of participant teachers from each school will join a Work Group; the pair should comprise at least one experienced teacher.

Participants are expected to attend the equivalent of three full days of workshops, and to complete school-based tasks between sessions. Workshops will be a blend of national and local sessions, and online and face-to-face provision. Multiplicative reasoning is a fundamental element of the KS3 maths curriculum, and an important foundation for much of the KS4 content. The centrally-produced resources are designed to support effective teaching of multiplicative reasoning through a series of core structures, laying foundations in Year 7 and then building on these within the Year 8 resources.

Our aim

The core purpose of the hub is to help schools and colleges lead improvement in mathematics education across the region. We seek to harness all the maths leadership and expertise within the area, to develop and spread excellent practice, for the benefit of all pupils and students.
